Dar Es Salaam — THE Arusha-based Regional Air Services has started offsetting some of the company's carbon footprint with Carbon Tanzania as part of its corporate responsibility for sustainable welfare of people and environment.
According to Regional Air Services General, Manager Ms Caroline Blumer, her company had chosen to work with Carbon Tanzania, to which offset funds will be channelled to protect and generate existing indigenous forests in Tanzania through community-based natural resource management.
"Through the process of reducing measured deforestation and degradation, Carbon Tanzania is increasing the carbon sequestration potential of these forests.
The project is focused on sub-montane forest in Arkaria village, Monduli Hills in Arusha Region," she said.
The Airline's Operations Manager, Ms Pamela Stephen said her firm had in the past organised charity fund events because Tanzania's environment was now being underpinned by Carbon Tanzania.
"We have assisted charity fund raising events over the years and will always do so, and our concern for Tanzania's environment is now being underpinned by our work with Carbon Tanzania", she said.
In place of a motor vehicle for example, Regional Air uses a bicycle messenger for many Arusha municipal deliveries and collections, where plastic bottles are crushed to enable easier recycling.
For several years now, there has been a slow but a definite move towards corporate social responsibility by companies both large and small, especially in tourism industry which had generated a lot of foreign currency.
