Tanzania: Shares Trading at DSE Go Down

Dar Es Salaam — SALE of shares at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) has experienced slowdown in recent weeks because of what experts say was impact of festive season.

The trend towards the end of November showed a great decrease in volumes of sales compared to previous months.

The DSE officials could not be reached for comment but a broker with Core Security who preferred anonymity said that the trend was because of more people were selling shares to meet festive season's demands.

He said share investors were currently busy trying to sell for Christmas and pay school fees in January when schools open.

It normally takes two days to sell shares but at the moment the broker said it takes more than a week for shares to get a buyer.

On Monday this week the DSE recorded only a turnover of 33.02m/- from 19,446 shares traded in 23 deals. TWIGA counter had 11,400 shares traded at 1,640/- per share in 8 deals while TBL counter had 50 shares traded at 1,760/- and 1,740/- per share in 6 deals.

SIMBA counter had 4,996 shares traded at 1,780/- per share in 5 deals while TCC counter had 3,000 shares traded at 1,780/- per share in 4 deals.

At the close of the session many shares remained unsold. The CRDB counter had 4,878,400 shares on offer at 157.50/- to and 160/- per share. NMB counter had 122,800 shares on offer at 830/- per share.
