Uganda/Burundi: Cranes Eye Last Eight, Burundi Confident

Kakamega — THE Uganda Cranes hope to secure a quarter final slot today when they take on the never-say-die Burundi in their second game of the Orange CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup at Mumias Sugar Sports Complex.

With three points in the bag already, courtesy of their impressive 2-0 victory over Tanzania last Sunday, the Cranes will need to beat Burundi, 4-0 losers to Zanzibar, to qualify with one match to spare in the group stages.

Team captain Andy Mwesigwa said the Bishop Nicholas Stam Centre where the team is booked is full of boredom with no television sets. "If we didn't come with our lap tops and CD players it would have been a blackout," he said yesterday.

The no nonsense defender said despite the boredom, the morale in the camp was high.

Head coach Robert Williamson said the team is determined to maintain its winning streak by going past Burundi who they blanked 5-0 in the semi finals during the Kampala edition.

Speaking at the team's training camp, Williamson said he will make a few changes in the team that beat the Kilimanjaro Stars.

"I need to try out virtually all the players to enable me come up with a formidable side in the knock-out phase," he said.

Among the likely new faces are URA's Mike Sserumaga who scored the second goal, Emma Okwi, Patrick Ochan and Robert Ssentongo. Burundi coach Amars Niyongabo exuded confidence and said they will take on Uganda with vigour and determination.

Meanwhile, Tanzania revived their hopes of playing in the knock-out phase when they pipped compatriots Zanzibar 1-0 yesterday. Mrisho Ngasha's shot beat Zanzibar goalkeeper Ali Mwadini in the 18th minute.

Cranes probable line up: H. Muwonge, S. Masaba, G. Walusimbi, J. Owino, A. Mwesigwa, O. Kasule, D. Wagaluka, T. Mawejje, R. Ssentongo, P. Ssennyonjo and M. Sserumaga
