Gambia: Peace Corps Rape Trial Continues

The criminal trial of one Sara Camara resumed yesterday before justice Moses Richards of the special criminal court in Banjul .

Sara was alleged to have unlawful carnal knowledge of a US peace corp without her consent and robbed her of a nokia mobile phone on August 10, 2009 at Fajara beach, Bakau, KSMD. Testifying before the court, inspector Boto Keita told the court that on August 19, 2009 whilst on duty at the major crime unit at the police headquarters in Banjul, a case of rape was referred to his office from the Bakau police station. Inspector Keita said the victim was said to have travelled to the United States for further medical treatment.

The witness told the court that when he received the case file, he left for Africell Company, where he got some information about the alleged stolen mobile phone and after getting the information, he started his investigation. Inspector Keita said the 1st number he called was one Abdoulie Camara, PW2, whom he invited to the police headquarter, but had refused to come, but was later arrested and the alleged stolen mobile phone was recovered from him and confirmed that he bought the said phone from the accused for D400.

The witness told the court that the accused was later arrested and he confessed that he was the very one who robbed and raped the said peace corp volunteer. Hearing continues today.
