Ghana: GABA Honours David Harper

The Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has elevated Mr. David Harper, a business mogul, to the position of chairman of the sponsorship sub-committee for GABA. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Harper thanked GABA for the honour done him, and pledged to offer his unflinching support for the association in diverse ways.

And to back his words with action Mr. Harper pointed out that: "I pledge to let my actions speak louder than my words, and do all in my power to do what I can, and to draw on my network of colleagues businesses, to do what they can to support this wonderful sport."

He revealed that in his responsibility as a businessman to channel some profit toward the needy, he will provide the necessary resources to support GABA, saying "Government alone cannot shoulder it all, hence his pledge to offer the needed support for the sport."

"This wonderful sport has produced such former champions as; DK Poison, Ike Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Joshua Clottey and more recently Joseph Agbeko - but perhaps the greatest of all, and reputably the greatest African boxer of all timeAzumah "The Professor" Nelson.

"Under the tutelage of Technical Director Azumah Nelson, whom I'm pleased to serve with on this sub-committee, I believe it would be a wonderful initiative to strive for new heights - never achieved," added Harper.

He pointed out that: "as a pre-cursor, the Commonwealth Games in India next year will provide an excellent stepping stone to the Olympics in London in 2012, and what will hopefully be Ghana's first ever Olympic Gold."

The chairman of GABA, Mr. Ray Quarcoo has said at the inauguration of the GABA sub-committees last Thursday that the reason for Mr. Harper's appointment forms part of his outfit's quest to raise the bar in the sport.
