Kumasi — WHEN THE Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Alex Segbefia subconsciously announced the second term bid of the President, His Excellency Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, little did many Ghanaians know that plans had already been put in place by some peripheral structures in the ruling party to advance the course of the President.
It has now emerged that campaign to get the good old Professor re-elected for the second time as the flag bearer of the NDC, and possibly the President of the country for another term, has already gotten underway with the formation of a pressure group in Kumasi to pursue the agenda.
Known as "Atta Mills for 2012 Elections," the pressure group has already begun underground campaign, through mobilization of support from the grassroots, ostensibly to get Prof. Mills once again elected as both flag bearer and President of the country.
Founded from a merger of the Friends of Atta Mills and Prof. Mills Movement, two major groups which have championed the presidency of Prof. Mills since 2003, the group is set to officially launch the campaign and swing into full action soon, after the party's regional congress which is few weeks ahead.
Perhaps, as a means of putting to bed the controversy over the political future of the current President, the Deputy Chief of Staff last Saturday stated on NEWSFILE, a current affairs programme aired on JOY FM in Accra, that Prof. Mills would be seeking re-election when his term expires in 2012.
Mr. Segbefia's declaration came in the wake of recent comments made by some high profile personalities within the party which sought to cast great deal of aspersion over whether the president would be seeking re-election in the 2012 elections, coupled with rumours that the president might hand over the ruling baton to his deputy, Mr. John Mahama.
However, the National Co-ordinator of Atta Mills for 2012 Movement, Mr. Gabriel Aggah, has told The Chronicle in an exclusive interview that the idea to marshal support for the president's bid for 2012 was conceived long before Mr. Segbefia's pronouncement
According to him, the group has already secured the green light and the needed support from the top hierarchy and would make its visions and missions public to Ghanaians.
"We are only waiting for the party to finish its regional congress and after new executives have been sworn in, we will begin serious campaign," Aggah stated.
The National Co-ordinator noted that the group was not a new one, insisting that it was the metamorphosis of the old movement "Get Atta Mills Elected"(GAME), formed by some party stalwarts including Mr. Ato Ahwoi, Dr. Oteng Adjei and Dr. Opuni, among others.
Asked if the group was not jumping the gun, considering the fact that the President has barely spent one year into his four-year term, Mr. Aggah stated that it was not too early to start campaigning, asserting that this was the opportune time to let the entire country know that the President has no intentions of stepping down after 2012, until all his wishes for the country and mother Ghana have been realized.
