Liberia: Malaria is Winning

Health officials have conceded that they are losing the war on malaria, as it remains a major killer disease, citing for over 70 per cent of infant mortality cases here.

Malaria is among the many diseases that attract thousands of funds from donors to prevent its proliferation in most Africa, including Liberia.

However, officials here say the disease is "endemic" in the country and that a recent 2009 survey conducted by the National Malaria Control Programs (NMCP) shows that 53% of Liberian households lacks access to a treated bed net while 47% has access.

NMCP's Acting Director, Tolbert Nyweysuah, told this paper that the survey indicates that children and pregnant women are more vulnerable to the disease, noting they are losing the fight against malaria.

"We cannot really be able to put a stop to malaria in the county. As you know, mosquitoes which causes the sickness lives every where among us in this society," he said.

If this is a factual and true statement, shouldn’t the Ministry of Health “Cry out loud to the International community, or the World Health Organization,” claiming there is a pandemic, which may result in the mobilization of resources to combat this killer disease?
