Nigeria: Northern Union Cautions On Yar'Adua

Abuja — The Northern Union (UN) has expressed concern over calls by some Nigerians that President Umaru Musa Yar'adua should resign or be shown the way out through constitutional means because of ill-health.

A statement signed by the Union's chairman, Chief Patrick Adaba, said that such campaign was inimical to peace, unity and stability of the country.

"We share in the concern for efficient, effective and good governance. But we are of the view that the calls for the President's impeachment or resignation are unnecessary, and such calls are inimical to the peace, unity and continued stability of our country," the chairman averred.

The union said though it believes in the application of constitutional provisions, it believes equally that "certain peculiarities of any nation also play a vital role in bringing about peaceful co-existence among the peoples of the nation."

One such peculiarities upon which the unity and stability of Nigeria is hinged, according to the group, is "the power rotation between the North and the South" which was conceived to solve the country's pluralism.

"While we do not lack the capacity to ethniticise the problem as it is being promoted in some quarters, we think that the situation at hand is one that calls for sobriety," Northern Union said.

The group also called on Nigerians to remember that "the wounds of the 1966 civil war are still fresh in our minds and for a long time remained a sour point in our national psyche."

The statement said despite the health challenges of President Yar'Adua, his administration has recorded successes in the banking sector reforms, rule of law as well as peace and stability in Niger Delta and some African countries all of which deserve applause.
