Tanzania: India Cultural Groups to Colour Queens Baton Relay in Dar

Dar Es Salaam — CULTURAL groups from India are expected to colour the Queens Baton relay in Dar es Salaam on December 28.

High Commissioner of India to Tanzania Kocheril Velayudhan Bhagirath, whose country will host the 19th Commonwealth Games next year, said today that logistics are being made to ensure that the relay is a success in Tanzania.

The Club Games will be held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14 and almost all 71 member countries will participate in 18 sports.

"We expect to hosts a number of entertainment activities at the official opening of the relay at the Uhuru Stadium.

We are currently working on ensuring that cultural groups from India come to Tanzania to showcase their traditional performances," he said.

He said 200 famous individuals would be given the opportunity to take part in the relay, to start at the Uhuru Stadium up to the State House where President Jakaya Kikwete will receive the baton.

The baton would arrive from Kenya and the Indian High Commissioner would flag off the race that will pass through Mandela Road, Kilwa, Msimbazi, Uhuru, Bibi Titi, Ohio, Ocean Road, Ferry Fish Market, Kivukoni and finally end at the State House.

The baton which carries Queen Elizabeth's message to the athletes started the relay at the Buckingham Palace in London on October 29, this year. It is expected to arrive at the opening ceremony of the Club Games after passing through 71 countries.
