Dar Es Salaam — THE University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) lecturer Mohabe Nyirabu returned an impressive score of three under 39 stable ford points to win the inaugural Play for Sight Charity golf tournament at the Dar e salaam Gymkhana Club over the weekend.
Playing off handicap seven Nyirabu withstood a stiff challenge from more than 70 golfers who took part in the one-day 18-hole event.
The tournament organized by Lions Club of Mzizima, Dar es Salaam aimed at raising funds for a campaign to help people with sight problems.
About 61m/- was raised at the event against the earlier projection which was pegged at 30m/-.
The first overall runner up position went to handicap six Athumani Chiundu who also retuned 39, but was beaten in countback by the winner.
In the A division category, Hamis Ally claimed the title with 39 points as Pembe Kondo finished second on 37 points.
Akil Yusufali garnered 36 points to take B division trophy as Joseph Tango, 34 points, settled at the second berth.
In C Division, Zainudil Dossa emerged the winner with 39 points whereas G. Mramba was runner up on 32 points.
The senior category prize went to Elia Mwaibanje who posted 31 points while Raphael Retara was second with 29. Salim Shariff returned 37 points to take the junior prize as Suleiman Kessy was second on 37 points.
Mbonile Burton, a reporter with the Tanzania Standard Newspapers, publishers of the Daily News and Habari Leo, claimed the ladies prize after firing 33 points as the second placed went to Olga Sokolova who collected 22 points. Burton also won the longest drive for ladies as Aidan Nziku did it in the men's discipline.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, the Immediate Past District Governor of District 411B (IPDG) Abdul Majeed Khan thanked the golfers for making the event a success.
"During my 35 years of Lionism and subsequently as IPDG, I have seen and experienced many activities and projects, but I have never witnessed such a phenomenal activity as what we have seen today in golf," said Khan.
