Ethiopia: Persons With Disabilities Present Talent Shows

Addis Abeba — Persons with Disabilities (PWD) presented their talent shows in different tournaments that aimed to promote and show their competence to the community and addressing specific problems such as Stigma and discrimination against this disadvantageous social groups.

Different athletics competition, crunch football tournaments, Poems, music and dance computation among People with Disabilities and other talent shows was presented for university community in connection with the international day of people with disabilities celebration on December 05, 2009.

The day was marked under a theme "Making the MDGs inclusive: Empowerment of Persons with disabilities and their communities around the world" at Addis Ababa University Sidist Killo Campus.

"All the concerned body and community ought to feel and work hard to ensure the right of persons with disabilities. PwD have the capacity to compute with other if situations are appropriately offered. But the challenge is the attitude of the community towards PwD," said Tiobsta Muluken, President of Addis Ababa City Government Sport Federation for Disabled.

According to Tiobsta, the event was serving as a podium to mobilize communities on empowerment of persons with disabilities in Sport and play programs, education and to put an effort to integrate in to social life.

"Furthermore the event also aims to teach children and the youth gender equality, demonstrating fair play and inclusion of disadvantageous groups of societies," she added.

The event was organized by Addis Ababa City Government Sports Federation for Disabled, Dires Bete-Sport in collaboration with Right to Play (RTP) - Ethiopia.

The objective of this international event is to celebrate and commemorate the UN day of People with Disabilities promoting empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities and to create awareness and understanding on the international covenant of PwD.

The slogan for the day was empowering People with Disabilities and their families; inclusion of people with disabilities in education, sport, and social life; stop stigma and discrimination against people with disabilities are among others.

Over 200 youth and PwD from different parts of Addis Ababa, government officials, athlete Ambassadors and about 500 University communities were join the celebration.

According to UN report around 10 percent of the world's population, or 650 million people, live with disabilities. More than 400 million people live in poor countries and there is a strong link between disability and poverty.
