Nigeria: Contractor Arrested Over Fertilizer Diversion

Abuja — Following the jumping of his bail bond issued by a Yola Magistrates' Court in Adamawa State, the contractor accussed of diverting 54 trucks of fertilizer meant for distribution to farmers in the state last farming season has been arrested in Lagos. This followed a bench warrant placed on him by the court.

Mallam Mohammed Sabo Jimeta, of KBM Integrated Services, was arrested during the week at a popular hangout in Festac town, Lagos, by men of the Lagos State police Command who, acting on a joint operation with their colleagues from Adamawa State, effected the arrest.

The Adamawa State government had dragged Mallam Jimeta to court when it accussed him of allegedly diverting 54 trucks of fertilizer meant for farmers in the state. It would be recalled that the state's ministry of agriculture had in an advert published months ago declared him wanted.

Mallam Jimeta's company, KBM, was said to have been awarded the contract for the supply of 100 trucks of fertilizer for which he collected 50 percent of the sum put at about N48 million and supplied 46 trucks, a move which made the Adamawa government drag him to court after failed attempts at making him supply the remaining trucks failed.

A letter made available to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY, dated February 17, 2009, to the managing director of KBM Integrated Services, entitled "Re: Transportation of Adamawa State Fertilizer from Lagos - Yola," expressed dismay at the contractor's attitude, prompting another letter dated November 24, 2008 in which Gali. A Fudamu of the agriculture ministry, on behalf of the commissioner, gave KBM one week to supply the balance of 54 trucks.

Investigations revealed that Mallam Jimeta has been moved to Abuja from where he may be moved to Adamawa this week for further prosecution.
