Nigeria: Bakassi - UN Investigates Harassment By Cameroon Gendarmes

Calabar — The Coordinator, United Nations Cameroon Nigeria Mixed Commission (CNMC) in Yaounde', Cameroon, Mr. Pierre Diouf, has arrived the Bakassi returnees camp to join four others already on ground on a fact finding mission.

Addressing the traumatised returnees at the camp premises, Mr. Diouf assured them of undiluted justice in the matter.He told the victims of alleged Cameroon gendarmes harassment that the presence of the United Nations team was a clear indication of the determination of the UN to bring lasting peace to the peninsula.

Diouf maintained that the alleged maltreatment by Cameroon authorities was a very serious human rights violation, stressing that the UN was already putting its machinery in motion to get to the root of the situation in the peninsula.

Mr. Diouf, who sympathised with the returnees described their present conditions as inhuman and pathetic having abandoned their livelihood and property to live in a camp.

The UN coordinator appealed to the returnees to remain calm as efforts were being intensified to unravel the truth and bring normalcy to their shattered lives.

Meanwhile, random interviews of the returnees by the UN officials have been ongoing on a daily basis in order to get authentic information regarding the alleged Cameroon Gendarmes harassment of Nigerians in the peninsula.

The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has continued to provide necessary comfort for the victims in the areas of food, medicine and accommodation.
