Nigeria: Kidnapping - 'Biometric Technology Will Improve Security'

Abuja — The Federal Government and major stakeholders in national security have been advised to embrace biometric security technology, to checkmate kidnapping in some parts of the country, which has further exacerbated the already precarious security situation across the country.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, weekend, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Tagged Technologies Limited, an indigenous high-tech firm, Mr. Daniel Omofoman, said all relevant agencies, private companies and individuals must come to terms with the challenging security demands of the 21st century by not only being security conscious, but adopting equally dynamic and sophisticated technology required to counter modern day crimes.

Omofoman, whose company, in partnership with HFC Consulting Limited, with the support of other security related agencies like the Nigerian Police, is speaking ahead of a two-day national seminar in Abuja, beginning tomorrow, titled; "Ensuring Safety and Security Controls Through Biometric Solution," to educate relevant agencies and stakeholders in the country on way out of the emerging security challenges. He said Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind among nations using Biometric Solution and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) security application to reduce rates of crimes such as armed robbery, forgery and kidnappings.

Biometric security applications include usage of fingerprint, face (iris) and voice authorisation among others, as signature for human identification.

"We need to be security conscious and bring quick solution to security situations in the country, that is why we are bringing relevant stakeholders to come up with a communiqué on the use of biometric technology, which is a unique way of human identification using biological attributes that cannot be forged, such as the eyes and finger prints," he said.
