Lagos — Despite his name being mentioned in Abuja and elsewhere in Nigeria as the manager to lead the Super Eagles to Angola and South Africa 2010, Russia's coach, Guus Hiddink has revealed that he will not lead another team to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Even though the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Mr. Sani Lulu Abdulahi has publicly stated the Federation's backing of Shaibu Amodu to the lead the Eagles through the two major competitions of 2010, the Presidential Task Force on the Eagles World Cup race is purportedly set on getting Hiddink or any other foreign manager to tinker the team. The Argentinean FA is also believed to be interested in signing the Dutchman.
"My working relationships with my employers have always been based on the principles of plain speaking and honesty," Hiddink told Sport Express yesterday.
"And in this way I can say for sure that I haven't signed contracts with anybody, nor have I even held any talks, neither with clubs nor federations. I won't hide the fact that many have wanted to hold talks. But I have declined them all.
"Almost all the sides that came through the qualifying stages with their own coaches will be going with them to South Africa," continued Hiddink in a goal.com report.
"But even if one or another federation were to offer me (the chance) to take charge of their national side for the World Cup, I would refuse. That would only be possible if I had made it through with the team I was in charge of during the qualifiers."
It is not clear now if pressure will be put on the former Chelsea part time manager to have a change of heart and team up with Nigeria. The Dutch turned down the chance to take long term contract with Chelsea because he was committed to leading Russia to South Africa but the Russians failed to qualify. Attention will now turn to other managers including the likes of Mancini and Ruud Gullit who have been mentioned amongst others.
