Mozambique: Former Renamo Guerrillas Arrested in Zambezia

Maputo — A group of 19 people, believed to have fought in the guerrilla army of the former rebel movement Renamo, during the war of destabilisation, were arrested in the central Mozambican province of Zambezia, on 4 December, according to a report in Tuesday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".

According to the police source cited by the paper, they were arrested in the town of Mocuba, while traveling in a minibus from Sofala province to the northern city of Nampula, where Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama is currently living. The police suspect that the group was involved in preparations for violent demonstrations to protest against alleged fraud in the general elections of 28 October.
