Kenya: Religious Group Seeks Clear Clause on Abortion

Nairobi — Christian women from Nyanza province have opposed sections in the draft constitution which they claim are vague on abortion and same sex marriages.

The leaders under the Kisumu Christian Women of Kenya also want the new constitution to accord all religions equal rights.

Bishop Winnie Owiti said on their behalf that the harmonised draft provides a loophole for introduction of abortion by failing to define reproductive health.

Unborn child

Speaking during a meeting at Jumuia Guest House in Kisumu, they said the draft law does not protect an unborn child from abortion.

"Same sex marriages are forbidden, but section 42(3) may give such partners the right to found a family and even adopt children," Bishop Owiti said.

The draft law should not provide for the establishment of kadhi courts without giving other religions the same privileges.

However, the leaders praised the balance of power between the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary, saying it will create good governance.
