Nairobi — Kisumu Town East MP Shakeel Shabir has said that he will push for the implementation of a price control Bill, which he says, will protect consumers from exploitation.
He said that most basic commodities were too expensive for a majority of Kenyans.
"If we have a law that controls the prices of basic goods, many Kenyans will be able to afford the goods and live a descent life," said Mr Shabir.
The Bill seeking to control prices of basic goods, Price Control (Essential Goods) Bill 2009, was introduced in Parliament by Mathira MP Ephraim Maina in July this year.
Critics, however, fear that controls could result in hoarding; a situation where goods often disappear from shelves especially when dealers get wind of expected price increases.
Should the Bill become operational, the government will begin fixing the cost of maize flour, wheat flour, cooking oil, rice, sugar and kerosene among other basic commodities.
Mr Shabir spoke in Kisumu during the Jamhuri Day celebrations.
Nyando MP Fred Outa said that the millions of shillings which were given out to spur growth across the country under the economic stimulus plan, should be properly utilised to benefit wananchi.
