Africa: Kilimanjaro Airport Contract Terminated

Dar Es Salaam — The Tanzanian Government has terminated its contract with Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO), a company that was managing Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) in the Kilimanjaro Region.

"The government decided to end its marriage with KADCO since KADCO failed to deliver as the contract stimulated," said the minister for Infrastructure Development, Dr. Shukuru Kawamba

However, government had signed a 25 year contract with KADCO in 1998 to manage KIA but due to the alleged failure the government terminated the contract with 14 years left.

According to the minister, government was therefore forced to nationalize the shares that belonged to KADCO.

Kawamba said the aviation sector is a vertebral part to development since it plays an important role in promoting tourism, mining and the agricultural sectors.
