The Volta Region office of Zoomlion Waste Management Company Limited has intensified its efforts to spray gutters, toilets and refuse disposal sites in the districts, as a step to destroying the breeding grounds and resting places of mosquitoes, to curb the menace of malaria.
The fumigation exercise, which was under the National Mosquito Control Programme, has so far covered the Ketu-South and North, Keta, Adaklu-Anyigbe, North Tongu and the Kpando districts, to help reduce mosquitoes in the area, as well as reduce malaria cases.
The Volta Regional Vector Control Officer, Mr. Richard Attipoe, who disclosed this to the Volta File during one of the spraying exercises at Kpando, explained that the programme was in collaboration with the Local Government Ministry and Zoomlion, and was a way of supporting the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), since malaria cases dominated cases at the various hospitals in the country, and the region in particular.
Mr. Attipoe said his outfit was carrying out educational programmes to create awareness on the importance of the programme, and called on the public to support Zoomlion and the Local Government Ministry in achieving the objective of reducing malaria in the country.
He stressed that Zoomlion appreciated the public response and support to the programme, which he noted, was making the programme one of the successful activities in the region, and commended the various Districts and Municipal assemblies in the region for the collaboration and support to the programme.
The Kpando District Chief Executive, Mr. Francis Ganyaglo, said the Assembly was impressed with the conduct of the officers of Zoomlion in the execution of the mosquito control programme, and assured Zoomlion of the Assembly's continuous support for the programme.
Mr. Ganyaglo observed that the activities of Zoomlion in the District, had positively improved upon the waste management system of the Assembly, and expressed the hope that the competence demonstrated in waste management, would reflect in the Mosquito Control Programme, which he said was already manifest.
He explained that so far, the level of the programme in the area had achieved a level that called for the collaboration of all, and stressed on a change of attitude of the people in matters of sanitation, which he observed, had become a major worry to the various assemblies.
Mr. Ganyaglo stressed on the need for people to adhere to basic environmental education that would help protect the environment, and improve on the health of the people, which would keep them healthy and promote productivity, as the majority of the people would be strong and contribute meaningfully towards the socio economic development of the country.
