Kumasi — MR. YAW Owusu Bimpeh, a former youth organizer has been elected the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), at the party's Regional Conference held at Ashanti Mampong last Tuesday.
Out of the 280 delegates who voted, Mr. Obimpeh polled 142 votes, while Mr. Frank Osei Mensah polled 109 votes.
The other contestants for the chairmanship position, in the persons of Alhaji Mohammed Sanni and Thomas K. Barimah, polled 20 votes and 7 votes respectively.
Mr. George Mensah, who had initially declared his intention to vie for the position, stepped down at the eleventh hour. Eligible voters included six delegates from each constituency in the region, which comprised the youth organiser, Members of Parliament from the region, members of the National Executive Committee who hail from the Ashanti Region, members of the Regional Executive Committee and District Chief Executives.
Mr. Alexander Ativor polled 198 votes to become the vice chairman, after beating Messrs Kwabena Abayie, Alhaji Sofo Mohammed, Ishmael Butler and Kwaku Aninkora Asiedu, who polled 120, 113, 63 and 46 votes in that order.
Mr. Joseph Yamin, the NDC parliamentary candidate for the Kwadaso constituency during last year general elections, emerged the winner for the regional secretary position, beating Mr. Yao Doe Tamakloe, the immediate past secretary, by a margin of 97 votes. Mr. Yamin had 113 votes, as against 16 votes polled by Mr. Tamakloe. Mr. Ebenezer Tei-Larbi, a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), had 102, while Alhaji Bulla Matalli polled 42.
Mr. Raymond Tandoh defeated Ofori Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as Zuba, to emerge as the deputy secretary, obtaining 209 votes against 77 votes by the latter.
Even though Alhaji Sanni Abdulai won the regional organiser position unopposed, five candidates battled it out for the deputy organizer slot, which saw Mohammed Bawa winning with 94 votes
The other four candidates, namely, Ibrahim Ahmed, Joe Osei Broni, Abeiku Bobson and Emmanuel Kwabena Adjei, shared the remaining votes by 82, 51, 28 and 22 respectively.
Justice A. H. Alfa polled 110 votes to beat Mohammed Maharaj and Samuel Yaw Adusei, who both polled 89 and 80 respectively, to win the propaganda secretary position.
Mr. Alex Yaw Opoku came out as the winner, with 126 votes beating Abdul Rashid Alhassan and Gado Umar Farouk who had 76 and 77 respectively, to become the new Deputy Propaganda Secretary.
Ibrahim Justice became the new treasurer with 241 votes, whilst his counterpart, Amidu Gariba, had 38.
Madam Edith Evelyn Amamoo, an administrator at KNUST, defeated her male counterparts to emerge as the deputy treasurer.
The newly-elected executives were sworn into office by the National Chairman of the NDC, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, shortly after the declaration of the results.
All the elected executives promised to unite and work hard to win the 2012 general elections for the NDC.
Present at the conference were former First Lady and Founder of the December 31st December Women's Movement, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu, the General Secretary of the party, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Kofi Opoku-Manu, the Mayor of Kumasi, Mr. Samuel Sarpong, and Dr. Ekwow Spio-Gabrah, among other high ranking members of the party.
