Liberia: Aloysius Toe Cautions Civil Society Organizations

The Executive Director of the Foundation for Human Rights, Aloysius Toe said that the human rights sector of Liberia has failed to carry on its their duties.

Speaking during programs marking the observance of the Civil Society Organization -2009 held in Monrovia, Mr. Toe said even though there exist multiple disadvantages, but the duty of the civil society which is to serve as watchdogs has not been achieved by "one inch."

The Human Rights Activist noted that there are lots of things to be tackled by the civil society to suit its performance such as the poverty reduction strategy, unjust practices and other basic practices that are against the masses.

Emphasizing further on the PRS, he said the civil society should rise up to make sure that the PRS reflect the interest of the voiceless. "This document is not honestly achievable within the timeline set by the Liberian government," Mr. Toe added.

He mentioned that civil society organization is should work along with the Liberian Council of Churches in partnership to enable them strive for the human rights issues in the country.

Mr. Toe however added that some civil society organizations have adopt the attitude of opportunist which is one of the contributing factor to the failure of the entity to fight against the massive violations of human rights in the country.

He said based on such critical situation, the civil society is yet to effect the social and political change in the country. "We are always in the pocket of the politicians and therefore, we will always be divided," Mr. Toe stressed.

He further told his colleagues that the work of the civil society has not been people center but rather directly individual center. He added that if this ideology is changed the civil society will succeed in their work.

Also speaking at the program was Hon. Elizabeth Mulbah, a commissioner of the Good Governance Commission. She informed the civil society that its work was critical in making Liberia a true democratic state.

She named one of the responsibilities of the civil society to be an informed participants in the achievement of democracy in Liberia.

Mrs. Mulbah told the civil society members that to succeed they have to carefully observe themselves and make necessary changes among themselves before making a mark at the society level.

She said the society depends on the civil society for good governance and before this gets achievable, they have to unite and coordinate their efforts. "You have to take into consideration coordination and specialization and also be focused if you have to succeed in your endeavor," she added

Mrs. Mulbah further warned that the civil society needs to stand for something or else it will achieve nothing. She also challenged the CSO to stand by action rather than mere saying. "If you will be watchdog for yourselves, you will not be watchdog for society" Madam Mulbah concluded.
