Nigeria/Angola: Eagles Angola 2010 Camp - Bayelsa May Stop Okonkwo, Akpan

Reigning Nigeria Premier League kings, Bayelsa United, may stop the duo of Chibuzor Okonkwo and Bassey Akpan, from hitting the Super Eagles pre-nations Cup camp in Durban, South Africa later this month.

Officials of the club believe it would be a waste of time for the duo to be in Durban, when Super Eagles handler, Shaibu Amodu, has already made up his mind on the players to take to Angola for the championship.

Amodu while addressing the press last week in Abuja did not mince words in dismissing the three home-based players he called to camp, after he succumbed to pressure from NFF for him to include some home boys in his list.

The Edo-born coach, who has little or no respect for home-based players said Okonkwo, Akpan and Heartland's Bartholomew Ibenegbu would only be in Durban to enjoy themselves as there is no way they can make his final list of 22 players after seven days of training.

In Amodu's words: "I am only inviting them to train and get the necessary exposure they need to play at the highest level." A very bitter Bayelsa official who, however, pleaded for anommity said Amodu's rating of their players is totally unacceptable.

"From all indications, we may stop Okonkwo and Akpan from honouring Amodu's invitation, since their trip will only end up being a waste of time. The two players are very dear to us. We need them to prosecute our league matches and we are paying them salaries.

So Amodu can't just take them only to go and use them as training materials. Again, we just can't understand Amodu. We are surprised he is saying a player that was a key member of our silver-winning Beijing Olympic team cannot play at the highest level. Amodu must be a confused man," our source said.

The visibly angry Bayelsa official noted that Westerhof succeeded because he never treated any player as inferior.

"Emma Amuneke who scored the two goals in the Tunisia '94 Nation Cup final against Zambia to give Nigeria the trophy was a home-based player. Amodu should go ahead and use his Euro super stars, I wish him luck", he said.
