Washington, DC — his AfricaFocus Bulletin has recent books (2008 and 2009) from AfricaFocus subscribers, including authors, editors, contributors, and publishers. It's a very substantial list, but I'm sure some have escaped my notice. If you are an AfricaFocus subscriber, check this out for your own books and those by the your fellow subscribers. If you are an author or editor and don't find your recently published book here, do let me know (at africafocus@igc.org), and I'll add it below.
Almost all the books below are available through Amazon, but several of the most interesting are not: Ellen Namhila's Tears of Courage, Mukoma wa Ngugi's Nairobi Heat, and the collection of papers on Southern Africa, with a special focus on Angola, edited by Nuno Vidal and Patrick Chabal. If anyone can suggest a convenient way to order these books in Europe or North America, I would most appreciate getting the information to add it below.
For other recent book suggestions and CDs, and the much wider range of books listed in AfricaFocus Bookshop, see the links at the bottom of the page.
And finally, for your enjoyment, there is one recent book urged on me by an AfricaFocus subscriber in Zimbabwe. That's The Last Resort: A Memoir of Zimbabwe by Douglas Rogers (http://www.africafocus.org/books/isbn.php?0307407977).
Written with humor and nuance, it's well worth the read. I am by instinct skeptical of books by white Zimbabweans, and I don't often quote Time magazine, but after reading the book, I must agreed with the magazine's reviewer:
"Do we really need another memoir by a white Zimbabwean? The surprising answer is yes, if it's as good as Douglas Rogers' The Last Resort .. [it moves] beyond memoir to become a chronicle of a nation. There is black and white, yes, but much more in the shades and tones of their mix - and it is in exploring them that Rogers, too, find his art." - Time
