A police constable working in Manyara region, who fired bullets indiscriminately apparently under the influence of alcohol, has been dismissed from the force.
The regional police commander, Mr Permana Sumari, said the constable has been fired for indiscipline as per the Police Standing Orders. He declined to give his name.
He said the disgraced policeman was working at the Orkesumet Police Station in Simanjiro district. Orkesumet is the district headquarters of Maasailand.
Sumari added that the constable committed the offence while on duty, guarding the National Microfinance Bank (NMB) branch in the town.
"He did random firing from his firearm at his guard station allegedly under the influence of alcohol," he said.
According to the RPC, the officer fired 28 rounds of ammunition from his sub machine gun (SMG). Fortunately no one was injured in the hail of fire that created panic in the town.
Two other deaths were reported in Arusha. In the first incident one a resident of Oloirien, an eastern suburb of Arusha, fell and died in a water reservoir he was cleaning. He was identified by only one name, Juma and aged 30.
At Baraa along the Moshi road an administrative officer with a local construction company Elias Nyamwihula, 56, was found dead with injuries all over his body.
Police suspect that he might have been killed elsewhere and his body dumped in the area. Investigations are underway to trace the killers.
