As the fuel situation worsens in the Federal Capital Territory, residents of Abuja are complaining of the transport fare hike by commercial drivers.
Our reporters observed that black market sales of fuel have risen to N400 per litre, while getting petrol at filling stations has been difficult because of the long queues and rowdy situations in the stations.
A motorist blamed the rowdy situation at filling stations to sharp practices by petrol attendants and the use of only one pump by the stations management.
The scarcity most commuters said has made commercial vehicle operators to increase their fares by a 100 percent.
Moses Andy, a Nyanya resident, said yesterday that he has been stranded at the bus stop for over two hours before getting a vehicle to his office
"Buses were shouting N300 to Wuse and with the way things are, I might end-up paying such amount to Federal Secretariat instead of the normal N50 is," he said.
He urged government to do something urgently as majority of people are suffering and spending a lot on transportation.
"The most painful thing is that government is not saying anything concerning the situation and this is unfair," Moses lamented.
Other commuters who spoke to city news said the commuters that live at far places such as Suleija suffer most as they wait endlessly for vehicles to take tem to work in Abuja.
"You can no longer enter a cab drop for N200 as they now charge between N500 to N1000, depending on the distance," a commuter said.
