Cape Coast — The Central Region Fire Service cannot boast of being a vibrant Fire Service, as it is inadequately resourced, while some of its stations exist in temporary structures.
Apart from Cape Coast, Winneba, Agona Swedru, Mankessim and Elmina, which are operating in proper structures, the rest are putting up in temporary structures.
The newly-posted Regional Fire Officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Augustine Danquah, gave this horrible situation at a special end of year workshop, organised by the German Development Corporation (DED) and the Central Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) last week Thursday.
According to him, the Assin Foso, Dunkwa on Offin, Breman Asikuma fire stations are nothing to write home about, and operate in temporary structures.
He also bemoaned the situation where the region has only one rescue fire tender, and four fire tenders, which were given to the region through the Gouda Municipality/Elmina Sister City Relationship.
He said the Fire Service was still using typewriters in this modern age, while only two computers exist for the service in the region, and called on individuals and organisations to assist the service with logistics to enable it perform its duties responsibly.
Mr. Danquah announced that plans were underway to establish fire stations at Twifu Praso and Abura Dunkwa, as part of measures to expand the protection of lives and properties in the region.
The Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Ama Benyiwa Doe, said the workshop was aimed at highlighting what the various departments in the region had achieved for the past 11 months.
She was grateful for the cordial relationship between journalists in the Region and the RCC.
She also thanked the chiefs and people in the region for working in harmony with her.
Other governmental departments such as Education, Community Water and Sanitation, the Police, and CEDECOM all took turns to address the press.
