France has qualified the report of the International Commission of Inquiry into the September 2009 events in Guinea as overwhelming.

In a demonstration organized by the opposition last September, security forces opened fire on the crowd, killing and wounding many, and reportedly raping women in public.

In a statement to reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York, Nicolas de Rivière, Deputy Permanent Representative of the French mission, says the report details crimes against humanity and atrocities.

France is calling on the Security Council to act quickly and strongly, he adds.

"Impunity cannot be an option. We want to act. The International Court of Justice must be seized. The Secretary General, we invite him to make this report public and we hope that the perpetrators of these crimes be brought to justice swiftly, including Dadis Camara."

Dadis Camara seized power in a military coup two years ago and is serving as President during the transition.

De Rivière told reporters it would be premature to talk of concrete actions before the report, which is now in French, is translated and examined by all the Security Council members.

The Security Council President, Michel Kafando of Burkina Faso, says the Council is preoccupied with the prevailing instability in the country and promises to sit down and discuss this report as soon as everyone gets their copy.

Both officials thanked President Blaise Compaore, the facilitator of the crisis, for his efforts and expressed their full support. - Jocelyne Sambira, UN Radio.
