Nigeria: Coscharis Thrills Auto Lovers With 2010 Land Rover Variants

Nigeria is gradually living up to the expectation of a soon-to-crowned automobile hub for the West Africa. Last week in Lagos an unusual event played out at the prestigious Southern Sun Hotel in Ikoyi, Lagos. It was the inauguration of a set of new Land Rover variants by Coscharis Motors.

All the vehicles are 2010 models. Since the idea of unveiling next year cars before the end of the year began several years ago, it was the first time it would happen in Nigeria.

The Rover variants include the latest Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery 4 and Freelander 2.

The new products were unveiled at a gathering made up of luxury car enthusiasts and motoring journalists under the theme "Drive the next generation".

The President of Coscharis Group, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, said the new models depicted style, strength, adaptability, ruggedness, capability and luxury.

He said that past Land Rover variants had "reflected the perfect niche vehicles for the growing demands of the family 4x4 market. Each variant has been built on innovative design and advanced technology.

"The 2010 models continue that ethos of evolution to winning effect: their strikingly architectural interior designs, clear-yet-stylish dashboard, user-friendly features and luxury interior."

He also revealed the specific features of each of the new product.

He presented the 2010 Range Rover as the most advanced and most powerful luxury vehicle for all terrains as well as the flagship of the brand.

According to him, "The 2010 model continues in an all-V8 line-up but in three distinct forms: the new LR-V8 Supercharged, the new naturally aspirated LR-V8 and the acclaimed LR-TDV8 diesel. This means more power, new refinement and better economy.

"In terms of interior design, it carries a masterful design and craftsmanship, all individually expressed through luxury details, including real wood veneers and the finest quality leather."

Compared with the outgoing model, the new Range Rover is said to have lower emissions, improved fuel economy and reduced engine noise.

Enhanced exterior is one of the strong points of the 2010 edition of Range Rover Sport. This, Maduka, said was focused around the refreshed rear end details including body colour finish to the tailgate trim, revised tread mat (on upper surface of the rear) with clear lens rear lights and side indicators.

He said, "The dramatic stance of the vehicle is further enhanced with the addition of a second 20 inch wheel style, available in painted silver or diamond turned finish."

He also said that the introduction of acoustic laminated side glass to both driver and passenger windows allows occupants to enjoy the updated cabin whilst experiencing reduced levels of road and wind noise, along with increased level of security."

The vehicle, he added, has three new engine dimensions to meet a variety of driving styles and performance requirements. They include the new supercharged or naturally aspirated LR-V8 petrol engines, the acclaimed LR-TDV6 diesel and the acclaimed twin turbo LR-TDV8 diesel.

Maduka said, "The terrain response now has a new 'Dynamic programme', the world's first production system of its kind to be based on predictive technology.

It works by predicting the response to driver input, allowing the system to mitigate any excessive movement, rather than a conventional system, which reacts after the vehicle has already moved."

He quoted Land Rover's Managing Director, Phil Popham, as saying that Range Rover Sport should now be regarded as quintessential tourer.

The latest Discovery 4LR 4 is presented as following on the enormous success of its predecessor.

He said, "The all new Discovery 4 proudly flaunts the tow assist feature, which helps the driver to perform otherwise tricky towing manoeuvres, and trailer stability, which reduces engine torgue and uses program med braking applications to regain control over a snaking trailer.

"The Discovery 4 is equipped with four-corner independent air suspension, which helps exceptional handling and ride qualities both on and off-road, and offers variable ride height flexibility for easier clearance, access and loading."

In comparison with the outgoing model, it has an improvement of nine per cent fuel economy; 10 per cent less CO2 emissions, with increased power of 29 per cent.

For the Freelander 2, the Coscharis MD said it came with sophisticated interior with a 'Matrix' metallic finisher across the width of the dashboard.

He said, "The Freelander 2 combines the advantages of a premium car - such as polished ride, accomplished performance, attractive cabin and ease-of-use with the attributes of a robust 4x4, including go-anywhere ability, toughness, stadium seating, cabin versatility and spaciousness."

The vehicle also came with two engines, 3.2-litre petrol and 2.2-litre turbo diesel, which combines performance with fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.

The highpoint of the event is the unveiling of the new vehicles by the President, Silverbird Group, Ben Bruce, who described them as "magnificent machines."
