Nairobi — Before Kenya's independence the then greater Meru District which later produced four other districts, had one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country. But like many others elsewhere in the country, the Meru Golf course which was situated within Meru town, disappeared from the Kenyan map.
This was probably because of the fact that playing golf for the locals was still a long time dream. Until 1963 golf was very much a preserve of the Europeans and a few Asians despite the fact that the country had well over 150 golf courses. However since the doors were opened to the locals in the early 1970s, a big number of Kenyans have taken up golf and a reasonable number of new golf courses have also emerged most if not all as private members clubs.
