Nairobi — Global brewer, SABMiller plc is to invest $16 million in a malting plant in Uganda next year, following a successful bid to convert locally grown barley into brewing malt.
According to Mark Bowman, managing director of SABMiller Africa, this significant investment is the direct result of using 'local raw material sourcing strategy', which the brewer is seeking to introduce in all its African operations.
The investment will be channelled through the group's local subsidiary Nile Breweries, at its site in Jinja, 80 km from the capital, Kampala," said Mr Bowman.
This comes barely two months after SABMiller subsidiary, Southern Sudan Beverages Ltd (SSBL) started brewing Southern Sudan's first locally produced beer -- White Bull Lager, bringing the total number of African countries the miller has interests in to 35.
Ian Alsworth-Elvey, managing director of SSBL said: "We've only just emerged from civil strife and already, we're showing the world that Southern Sudan can produce a product that can stand side-by-side with any in the world. It's a remarkable achievement."
Africa's beer market has held up in the face of the global economic downturn, prompting brewers to keep investing and crafting strategies aimed at protecting and growing their market share.
Tactics include substituting local barley, sorghum and cassava for imported barley to make European-style lager cheaply for a low-cost segment of the market, which SABMiller reckons could be worth $3 billion a year.
SABMiller's use of locally sourced raw materials in Uganda began in 2002 when Nile Breweries launched two beers brewed using sorghum grown by smallholder farmers.
Purchases of sorghum jumped to 12,000 tonnes in 2007 from 1,600 tonnes in 2003, the company said.
London-based SABMiller plans capital expenditure of $200 million next year on its operations in Africa.

The examples you noted above are of people who hold some patents on items that White European people have invented. Interestingly enough, none of the people you cited has an African name...thats because the Africans cannot invent or built anything. But they are very skilled at breaking and destroying things.
