Rwanda: 33 Babies Born On Christmas in Kigali

Kigali — A mini survey conducted by Sunday Times in Kigali's major Hospitals showed that 33 babies were born Christmas day but the number could be bigger across the country.

Sunday Times visited Muhima Maternity Hospital, University Teaching Hospital (CHUK), King Faysal Hospital and Kibagabaga, where a total of 18 boys and 15 girls were born.

Muhima maternity Hospital registered the highest number of babies born with a total of 25 babies. Kibagabaga registered 7 and CHUK had 1 baby boy.

Uwishuri Marie de la France from Nyakabanda in Kicukiro district was one of the lucky mothers at Muhima Hospital who gave birth on Christmas.

"I am so happy to have given birth to my second born on a Christmas day. It feels so special because Christmas is a holy day," said Uwishuri.

Most mothers in the hospitals that Sunday Times visited delivered safely except at CHUK where a pair of twins born prematurely left one dead.

Immaculate Barindikije,Matron of the CHUK maternity ward said that the surviving baby was being taken care of and that the mother was also recovering well.
