Zimbabwe: Kombi Driver Arrested

Harare — A 20-YEAR-OLD commuter omnibus driver has been arrested for knocking down and injuring a traffic policeman who was manning a roadblock along Gleneagles Road in Harare yesterday morning.

The policeman, who sustained serious head injuries and bruises all over his body, was reported to be in a serious condition at a city hospital.

National Traffic Police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome yesterday said the incident occurred near Zimtile at around 5.30am.

"Four officers were carrying out their traffic duties when a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus approached the checkpoint at high speed," he said.

The officers noticed that the vehicle that had 18 passengers was unable to stop and went off the road.

"Unfortunately, the driver also veered off the road and knocked down the officer, seriously injuring him," said Insp Chigome.

The engine stalled, leading to the arrest of the driver.
