Tanzania: Lugalo Golf Tourney Gathers Pace

Dar Es Salaam — THE weekly Zain fiddle golf tourney held at Lugalo TPDF golf course over the weekend has continued to gather momentum with more players participating.

In the recent past golf players numbered between 15 and 20 each week but improved to 30 this weekend.

"This shows that more people are playing golf at the club", the club's professional golfer David Helela said.

The golfer who is also the club's Public Relations Officer said the number is likely to be over 50 players in the coming two months.

"The event is a huge success because all players are exhibiting sportsmanship in the weekly play-offs", he added.

He urged all golf stakeholders in the country to put more efforts towards the promotion of young talents.

"It's my hope that Tanzania will be able to send a golf team in 2015 Olympics", he said.

He thanked Zain and TBL for their efforts that have seen young and old players coming together to play the sport.

In last week's tournament, youth golfer Emmanuel George and his energetic competitor Edwin Thomas battled it out and managed a tie with both garnering 37 stableford points. Tailing the duo with 36 points was Kondo Ally.

The men's category was not left far behind with veteran golfer Boniface Nyiti leading with 34 points, outsmarting his closest competitor Saleh Tambwe who posted 30 points.

In the girls' discipline, Grace Stephen yet again stole the show by scoring 29 points ahead of Sara Denis by three. There were no lady entrants in the well attended 18 -hole tourney with a total of 34 players.
