Somalia: About 15 Killed, 30 Injured in Fresh Fighting in Mogadishu

About 15 people have been killed and 30 others have been wounded in Mogadishu after fresh fighting with heavy shelling between the Islamist fighters of Hizbul Islam and AMISOM troops broke out in the capital, witnesses and official told Shabelle radio on Friday.

Most of the areas where the fighting broke out were Dabka intersection, Shaqalaha, KM4, all the military bases of the African Union troops ( AMISOM) and the transitional government troops in Hodan district in Mogadishu where both sides exchanged heavy gunfire and shelling.

Mohamed Osman Arus, the spokesman of Hisbul Islam Organization for the military operations told Shabelle radio that the fighting started as they had attacked several military bases of the African Union troops (AMISOM) saying that they inflicted more casualties to them during the fighting.

MR. Arus said that the killed three of the African Union troops in the fighting adding that their dead bodies could be seen in the spots where the clashes continued.

On the other hand we had contacted with the spokesman of AMISOM troops major Brigye Bahuko to know more about the fighting with the shelling and replied they there were no casualties on their side as the fighting continued pointing out that AMISOM troops are always ready for defending themselves if attacked.

Asked about the civilian casualties and the targeted residential areas in the capital, he denied that they shelled the populated areas in the capital during the war saying that the journalists could not tell the reality due to fears of the Islamist fighters or else would be killed.

Abdirsak Shino, Shebelle's reporter visited some of the shelled neighborhoods in Hal-wadag and Hodan districts saying that 5 people were killed and about 10 others wounded at Bakara market, Bakara intersection, Hawl-wadag, and several areas where the mortar shells landed in parts of both districts in Mogadishu. He said most of the wounded people were rushed to hospital by the emergency traffic as the fighting continued.

Witnesses around KM4, a base for the Ugandan troops told Shabelle radio that he could see two dead people and several other wounded civilians during the fresh fighting between the Islamist fighters of Hizbul Islam and AMSIOM troops in Mogadishu.
