The House of Representatives yesterday warned that the alleged attempt to blow up a US bound passenger plane by one Nigerian should not be tantamount to treating all Nigerians shabbily.
Reacting to the arrest of a Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, for an alleged terrorist act in the United States of America, Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora Rep Abike Dabiri-Erewa, however, urged Nigerians to cooperate with security agents at the various entry points whenever they travel abroad.
Abdulmutallab was ar-rested in Detroit on Decem-ber 25, for attempting to blow up a Northwest Airlines aircraft on its final approach to Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Expressing shock over the incident, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa described Nigerians as peace loving.
"The committee condemns any act of terrorism and notes that Nigerians are peaceful people who will not condone or be part of anything terror related," she said in a statement.
"The committee deeply regrets any inconvenience and embarrassment this act would cause millions of hardworking and focused Nigerians in Diaspora and indeed travelers all over the world.
"The committee urges Nigerians traveling to cooperate even if vigorously searched at airports, adding that "The suspect does not in any way represent the face and conscience of Nigerians all over the world."
The committee also commended the suspect's father, who reportedly reported his son's extremist views to the US embassy, describing the move as a "highly responsible act".
