Nigeria: Jikwoyi Residents Clean-Up Surroundings

Residents of Jikwoyi over the weekend carried out sanitation exercises within their environment and roads.

Huge piles of refuse that have been a source of worry to the residents for a long time were also burnt.

Michael, a resident, said residents of the area decided to carryout the exercise because officials of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has failed to live up to its responsibilities by removing the dirt everyday.

Our reporter observed that the sanitation exercise took a greater part of the weekend and was coordinated by the land owners in the area.

At the Phase 2 part of Jikwoyi, residents worked tirelessly in piling refuse that were later set ablaze and cleared up.

A resident called for more of such sanitation exercises, adding that if it is stopped, the refuse dumps might return in the next couple of days.

Our reporter learnt that AEPB officials cleared dirt from the area a few weeks ago but the refuse dumps sprang up after some days of the exercise.
