An African intellectual said that Security Council Resolution No. 1905 imposing sanctions against Eritrea in connection with the Somali issue is an unjust move that amply demonstrates the insatiable appetite and ambition of the United States.
In an article he wrote in the UAE-based Al-Ethad newspaper published yesterday under the title "US Interference in the Horn region," Mr. Hilmi Shaerawi pointed out that Washington has not only failed to rectify the erroneous strategies pursued by previous US administrations but is also continuing it in an intensified manner. Citing as an example the situation in Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen, the intellectual indicated that the situation in the Horn of Africa in general and Somalia in particular continues to worsen due to the war-mongering and expansionist policies of the US Administration. In this respect, he explained that it is erroneous and unjustifiable to adopt a resolution against Eritrea simply because it opposes such acts of interference and the genocide they entail.
The writer went on to say that the sanctions resolution against Eritrea constitutes a vivid demonstration of the failure of the Obama Administration to live up to its pledge of promoting peace and stability upon assuming office.
Mr. Hilmi Shaerawi pointed out that it is surprising to punish Eritrea, while on the contrary Ethiopia is aggravating the prevailing turmoil through deploying thousands of soldiers in sovereign Somali territories and is announcing to increase the number of troops if necessary. In this regard, the African intellectual underscored that peace would never prevail in the world as long as the US continues its hegemonic and proxy strategies.
Noting that the world public has already abandoned initial hopes about the Obama Administration, he explained that the visible activities being resorted to on the part of the Bush-sponsored military force in Africa, AFRICOM, over the past couple of months fully attest to the fact that the continent is being exposed to more military interventions.
The failure of the international community to apply pressure against Ethiopia which continues to occupy sovereign Eritrean territories in violation of the Boundary Commission's final and binding ruling represents yet another surprising scenario, Mr. Hilmi Shaerawi added.
