Nigeria: Politics Tears Uba Family Apart As Ekwueme, Others Back Soludo

analysis

Recent peace which returned in the Uba family in Anambra state following the reconciliation of Dr. Andy Uba, the governorship candidate of the Labor Party (LP) with his younger brother, Chris, may have shattered again as the political camps of the two political iroko are now locked in a bitter battle over who controls Andy's governorship campaign team.

This is even as the former Vice President and founder of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Alex Ekwueme has explained that his suppert for Prof. Chukwuma Soludo was because the former Governor of the Central Bank (CBN) is better equipped to govern Anambra State.

Ekwueme stated this over the weekend while fielding questions from newsmen after a stakeholders meeting of the Old Aguata zone where Soludo was unanimously endorsed as the candidate of the area that comprised of three defunct local government areas.

The event which was attended by over 400 delegates took place after a similar meeting of Oko Town Union at Oko Civic Centre where the relations Ekwueme equally endorsed Soludo as a candidate of the community.

Even as Soludo consolidated, the peace made between the two political heavyweights, Andy and Chris became fragile again as was the case between 2006 and 2007 over who should control the PDP structures in Anambra state, even though both politicians served as foot soldiers of former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Champion newspaper recalls that the in-fighting got so messy at the build- up to the 2007 elections that Chris had to be detained at the Force Headquarters in Abuja by then Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, on the eve of the governorship elections to pave way for Andy, who then, had the backing of the former president.

Dr. Uba was declared winner of the election but was thrown out of office after 14 days by the Supreme Court which ruled that there was no vacancy in Anambra Government House as at the time the election that took him to office was conducted.

Since then, the two brothers have lived like cat and mouse on the political front until recently when Andy and Chris were said to have reconciled their differences in order to work together towards ensuring that their family gets hold of power in the state again.

With the loss of the PDP ticket by Dr. Uba and the grabbing of the LP governorship ticket, the relationship remained fragile as their political camp are once again said to be polarized while their followers are enmeshed in battle of supremacy.

According to sources in the LP Abuja headquarters, though Andy was able to convince his brother, Chris, who is said to be the real grassroots politician in the Uba family to give him all necessary support including making his political platform available, things had moved smoothly until it became noticeable that hundreds of Chris supporters were moving back to the PDP, where they believed they will be more relevant.

They were said to be complaining that Andy has positioned his (Andy's) core loyalists in key positions in his campaign organization and that since Chris and his men joined the Andy camp, he is yet to implement the demand by Chris supporters that some of them be appointed into key positions in the campaign team.

"Andy's people are everywhere and the man has not heeded the call for him to create room for people from Chris camp to participate constructively. You cannot leave the PDP as an official and end up being a beggar in the Labour Party that is not known to most people in the state. To me, it is better to be a houseboy in PDP than even to be big man in Labour Party," one of the sources stated.

Recent inquiry showed that hundreds of PDP members who were staunch supporters of Chief Chris Uba are going backing off to Soludo, making the Soludo Campaign Organisation seem the beautiful bride.

Meanwhile, the former Vice-President told a crowded gathering in Aguata, his old local government area that his support for Soludo was deep seated because "Soludo is the most qualified among all the contestants."

While addressing the gathering, Ekwueme explained that "in contest like this you must put in the best of what you have. Soludo is better equipped than the others to govern Anambra and you cannot leave the best in this type of contest and go for people who have nothing to offer."

He tasked all PDP members in the state and Old Aguata people to commit themselves to ensuring that Soludo becomes governor of the state by March this year adding that those who have left for other parties "cause more irritation to the party than giving it assistance."

From the Communiqué presented at the end of the Stakeholders Meeting five criteria were applied in determining who was best suitable for the job. They include personality, performance profile and antecedents, breadth of vision for Anambra State , Programme articulation and National and International reach and contacts.

Apart from Ekwueme, 38 other members of the organisation signed the Communiqué.

In the same vein, business mogul and chieftain of the PDP Prince Arthur Eze has vowed to invest his money and time to ensure that Soludo wins the February 6, governorship election saying that Anambra has had enough of half- baked governors who give service that do not meet the expectations of the people.

He spoke in his country home Ukpo at a Stakeholders meeting conveyed by him for Anambra Central Federal Constituency.

In a motion for adoption of Soludo moved by Hon. Ozoh Ughamadu former Speaker of the State House of Assembly and adopted unanimously by the members including Hon. Chuma Nwofor and Alfo Nzegbu, Prof. Soludo was adopted as the candidate of the Anambra Central.

In his response, Prof. Soludo regretted the abject poverty and unemployment that have afflicted his people in the midst of plenty and promised that things will change for better from March 17 this year when he would become the governor of the state.

Chairman of Soludo organisation, Okey Muoaro described Soludo as a good product that needs no advertisement, describing Ekwueme and Arthur Eze's endorsement as the best thing that has happened to Anambra people, promising that PDP will have landslide victory at the poll.
