Nigeria: PDP Cautions INEC Against Manipulation of Anambra Poll

Abuja — The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cautioned on Wednesday that failure by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to get the Anambra State governorship election right on February 6 was capable of spelling doom for the country in the 2011 general elections.

The party also advised Chairman of INEC, Maurice Iwu, to ensure a transparent, open, free and fair election in the state.

It stated that it was not unmindful of the commission's decision to 'plant' a Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state to thwart any rigging plan during the poll.

National Vice Chairman, South East, of the PDP, Olisah Metuh, noted while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday that the election would be a litmus test for the country and the electoral body.

This is because all eyes are on the outcome of the Anambra State governorship poll, he said.

He alleged that the Peter Obi-led Anambra State Government orchestrated some moves to ensure that PDP never had a candidate for the election.

"I want to accuse the government of Anambra State of trying to make sure that PDP didn't have any candidate, they completely orchestrated it for us not to have a candidate, but by the grace of God because of the constitution of the PDP that gave the NWC the power to bring up a candidate, we had to achieve that", he said.

According to Metuh, "If we don't get it right, it will damage the image of democracy in Nigeria.
