Kenya/Cameroon: Harambee Stars Get a Chance for a Scrap With the Big Boys of Cameroon

Nairobi — Thanks to weather conditions in Nairobi being similar to those in Lubango, Kenya's Harambee Stars have chanced on an international football match against Africa's highest ranked team in the world the Indomitable Lions here in Nairobi.

The rare tie for Kenya was first scheduled to be held at Nyayo National Stadium but later moved to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani at the request of the Cameroonians who said the latter venue was superior and more convenient.

The Indomitable Lions have been in Nairobi since Tuesday preparing for the African Cup of Nations that begins in Angola on Sunday.

Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen said early this week they needed to acclimatize and he will be glad to know that the weather forecasted for Lubango, where the Lions will be based, is showers and cloudiness with temperatures in the 20s degree centigrade over the next week just like Nairobi has been.

But for Saturday the former France defender will be more concerned with a professional performance from one of Africa's towering football giants as they gather their momentum for the Angola event.

The Frenchman has said he will be taking the match seriously and he will be keen to come off with a victory, which for his information will be a first for the Lions over the Stars in Kenya.

The last time the two side met here was during an African Cup of Nations qualifiers in February 1997 in Nairobi that ended in a barren deadlock.

Most will however remember the 3-3 thriller-a-minute draw at Nyayo National Stadium way back in 1987 during the All Africa Games.

Star striker Samuel Eto'o, still tops the Cameroon international scoring chart and will lead compatriots Achille Webo of Mallorca (Spain) and Mohamadou Idrissou of SC Freiburg (Germany) in the Nairobi goal hunt.

Kenyans will also have the opportunity to see Arsenal midfielder Alexander Song and his uncle old war horse Rigobert Song.
