Jos — The Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) Jos North Local Government chapter has confirmed that 26 Muslims died in Sunday's skirmish at Dutse Uku and Nassarawa Gwong Area of Jos.

JNI spokesman Sani Mudi told our correspondent, "The number increased from the initial 22 people we buried earlier this morning, five people died as a result of injuries they sustained".

He added that they recorded over 300 people injured and taken to various hospitals. The Plateau State government, Nigeria Police and the Red Cross were silent over the casualty figure. The Commissioner for Information Mr Gregory Yenlong said they were still waiting for the report, adding that Governor David Jonah was shocked and worried about the entire situation and summoned religious and traditional rulers to discuss and find a way to ensure sustainable peace. Police Public Relations Officer ASP Mohammed Lerama said, "Police are still compiling the number of deaths recorded from the Divisional Police out post in all the places affected by the crisis". ASP Lerama denied that the police killed innocent people, saying the crisis was not with the police but within the community, adding that police in collaboration with other security operatives went there only to restore law and order.
