Legal practitioners give priority to the fight against corruption in 2010.
Cameroon's Head of State, Paul Biya in his address to the nation last December 31 stated that democracy also concerned the preservation of public property and declared that government was determined to carry out the fight against corruption right to the end. By the declaration, the Head of State set the tone for the heightened fight against the corruption cankerworm that is undermining the efforts government and development partners have embarked on to better the living conditions of the population.
The First President of the Supreme Court, Alexis Dipanda Mouelle on January 20 during the 2010 New Year wishes in the institution, reiterated the commitment of the entire judicial corps to accompany the government in fighting against corruption. In stating that the role of the judiciary family in cleansing the management of public finances and the business environment was a challenging task, Dipanda Mouelle called on them to continue the fight against financial delinquency as their contribution to the harmonious development of the country. Judicial personnel must play their role in the raging anti-corruption crusade with loyalty, integrity, courage, seriousness, honour, competence and independence. All actors in the judicial domain must respect all jurisdictions and all that contribute to the practice of justice.
The Supreme Court in particular, occupies a key position in the anti-corruption crusade chain. The Audit Bench of the Supreme Court has the responsibility of auditing the management accounts of State corporations and other financial institutions placed under the government. The First President of the Supreme Court disclosed that during the 2009 fiscal year, the Audit Bench uncovered a lot of dysfunctions in the management of public funds. The Audit Bench has not only been auditing accounts but more importantly works in collaboration with other State institutions in charge of ensuring sanity in the management of public funds. Within 2009, it had a working session with the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Assembly. There also exist a consultation platform between the General Directorate of the Treasury and the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court to share information on the expectations of the Audit Bench with regard to the presentation of accounts and the difficulties accountants face on drawing up management accounts. The Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Amadou Ali while receiving New Year wishes from the staff of the ministry reiterated the commitment of the all arms of the judicial corps to strengthen the ongoing fight against corruption, misappropriation and embezzlement of public funds.
