Lagos — The National Coordinator of the global wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Diaspora, Dr. Mishak Nnanta, has strongly condemned the wanton killing of Igbos in the North by Islamic extremists at the least provocation, with a stern warning to respond accordingly in the event of further unprovoked attack.
Dr. Nnanta who made the outburst in Umuahia while reacting to the recent Jos blood bath cautioned that Ndigbo in Diaspora would no longer fold their alms to watch their kits and kin being slaughtered like "Christmas fowls" by "irresponsible mortals" in the name of religion.
"Enough is enough! Igbos in Diaspora cannot tolerate this barbaric act any longer. If they feel we can no longer continue as one, let them tell us instead of making us refugees in our own country. But Ndigbo are the first son of this country and we cannot run away from Nigeria. If this nonsense continues Ndigbo will react", he warned.
The Ohanaeze Chieftain bemoaned the alleged interception of vehicles conveying commuters enroute Jos during which a prominent Umuahia-based lawyer was killed along side his co-passengers as he returned from Gombe where he had gone to defend a matter in Court.
He therefore called on the Federal government to urgently set up an independent commission of inquiry to determine the immediate and remote causes of the "genocide", as well as the alleged complexity of some military personnel in the riot.
According to him, any person indicted should be made to face the full wrath of law no matter how highly connected.
Dr. Nnanta also called on Ndigbo to unite as a people and collectively advance the cause of the race in order to regain their lost prominence in the political equation of Nigeria , and expressed faith in the collective existence of the country as an indivisible entity.
He further harped on the need for Igbo political elite to set aside their individual political inclinations and synergize for the actualization of Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in 2015.
Dr. Nnanta also called on the South/East governors to speak with one voice concerning issues of common interest instead of maintaining unnecessary silence reminiscent of cowards apparently because of parochial and personal political interests.
He however lauded Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia State for his concerted efforts to improve the security situation in the state, and called on Abians in Diaspora who are scared of visiting home on the grounds of insecurity to have a change of mind as crime especially kidnapping has drastically reduced.
Meanwhile tension has continued to mount in Umuahia and Aba about a possible reprisal attack on the Hausas as members of Hausa community seem to have gone into hiding.
Investigations reveal that most of them are now taking refuge at Lokpanta Regional Cattle market where security has since been beefed up around them to prevent the 2010 episode in the after math of the infamous Kaduna blood bath.
However, Commissioner for Police, Abia State, Mir. Jonathan Johnson has assured the public and members of Muslim and Hausa community of the preparedness of the command to ensure the security of lies and property.
The CP who gave the assurance in a release endorsed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr. Ali Okechukwu, stated that there is no cause for alarm as the state is peaceful, hospitable and has long history of religious tolerance.
The release further enjoined members of the public to shun rumour mongers who may wish to capitalize on the recent Jos crisis to foment trouble in the state as the police has been placed on red alert to checkmate the activities of miscreants.
Meanwhile, Gov. Theodore Orji has directed the immediate evacuation of All Abia indigenes especially students trapped in the troubled Plateau State.
A release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Kingsley Emeruwa says luxury buses with police escorts have been stationed at Abuja hostel, University of Jos for the evacuation exercise.
The release enjoined relations of Abia students in Jos to contact their beloved ones and notify them of the governor's gestures and assemble at the waiting points for onward movement to Abia.
