Maputo — The failure on Wednesday of an electricity sub-station at Salamanga, in Matutuine district, has deprived parts of southern Mozambique of electricity.
According to a Thursday release by the electricity company, EDM, the Salamanga sub-station was knocked out by torrential rain that fell overnight in the area.
Among the places deprived of power are the Matutuine district capital, Bela Vista, the tourist resort of Ponta do Ouro, on the border with the South African province of Kwazulu-Natal, and two outlying Maputo city districts - Catembe, and the island of Inhaca.
EDM says it sent technical teams to Salamanga early on Thursday morning, and they are working to repair the sub-station "as quickly as possible".
Rains in central Maputo led to a breakdown in two transformer posts, cutting off power to parts of the capital. The EDM release announced that the posts have been repaired, and power restored to the areas affected.
