Ghana: Confusion in Obuasi NPP Deepens

Obuasi — Whoever thought the confusion in the Obuasi branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was over, following the successful election of the Ashanti regional executives of the party over the weekend in Kumasi, should start revising his notes, as reports suggests that a section of the members who boycotted the party's constituency elections, are in the process of organising a counter-election.

The current move by the group is to back their claim that the first congress was unconstitutional and an indictment on the interiority of the NPP, as a party that swims in the poll of democracy.

Sources close to the group hinted The Chronicle that the 'rebels' held an emergency meeting on Tuesday at the residence of Mr. Samuel Dan Nyankey, who was expected to battle Mr. Joeseph Kwadwo Boampong for the Obuasi chairmanship position, to strategise on how to push their agenda through.

Mr. Nyankey, in a telephone chat, confirmed calling the meeting, and explained that they would not sit down for a section of the party members to take the party for a ride.

He further accused the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Peter Mac Manu, of taking sides in the divisions in the party, adding, "If Mr. Mac Manu wants to destroy the NPP, we will help him do that."

He continued that if the leadership of the party would accept the outcome of an election which was not supervised by officials of the electoral commission, then "we too can organise ours."

The division in the party has resulted in the resignation of the members of the Council of Elders of the party in the constituency, led the former Member of Parliament for Obuasi, Mr. Bright Boadi Mensah.

The following are the reasons cited by the members of the Council of Elders for their resignation. 1. The Regional Office of the party assigned the Council of Elders of the party to broker peace in the constituency, then divided into two factions, over the election of polling station executives.

2. The Council of Elders delegated a three-man committee on a fact-finding exercise on the disputed areas, to ascertain the validity of or otherwise of the claims by the two factions.

3. The Council, after establishing the fact that there was no need for a re-run of elections in the disputed polling stations. 4. That, four days later, ie December 2009, a resolution letter was received by the council from the former constituency secretary Mr. Stephen Acquah, accusing the entire council as being biased and would not co-operate or attend any call from the Council .

5. That the regional office of the party instead of doing a follow-up exercise using the Council's report sent to them rather chose to sit in Kumasi to resolve Obuasi problems

6. That, recently it came to the council's notice that a mediation committee had been set up in Kumasi without informing the Council, and that the Committee had carried out a vetting exercise

7. That out of the 650 voters who are constitutionally qualified to select the Obuasi constituency executives, and the fact that only handful of voters who are Mr. Joseph K. Boampong supporters were around, with the contestants from the other faction refusing to participate in such an unlawful exercise, shows that the Mr. Boampong-led faction had no respect for authority, and the entire NPP members in the constituency, including the Council of Elders.

8. That the role played by the mediation committee and the regional secretariat personnel, who jettisoned the Council of Elders reports sent to them, leaves much to be desired.

9. At least the committee mandated by the constitutional amendment to supervise or conduct constituency elections, include the Chairman of Council of Elders, a patron, one woman from the Council of Elders, and thwo other Council members, and finally a regional representative.

10. In view of the blantant disregard of the constitutional requirement to be practiced in all constituencies, and the connivance of the mediation committee with Mr. Joseph Kwadwo Boampong, the 'newly-elected Obuasi constituency chairman," and his group, is an indication to the fact that there is no need for the Council of Elders to remain in office, hence the dissolution. 11. That finally, the Chairman of the Council of Elders, Mr. Boadi Mensah, and his family, hereby resign their membership from NPP, because of the principles and truth which are not operating in the party.

12. That the party's constituency office, belonging to the family of Mr. Boadi Mensah, has been taken over from the party.
