President Kaberuka Begins Official Visit to China

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Donald Kaberuka, started his three-day official visit to the People's Republic of China on Thursday, February 4, 2010.

A meeting with Mr. Wang Qishan, Vice Premier, responsible for economic, energy and financial matters, was the highlight of the visit.

During their discussions, the Vice Premier stressed the fact that China values the AfDB as its leading partner on development financing in Africa. Mr. Wang stated that "China will take an active part in the General Capital Increase (GCI) and African Development Fund (ADF) processes". He commended the Bank for its active role in the financial crisis, and congratulated President Kaberuka for his leadership over the past five years.

President Kaberuka is in China to hold discussions with government officials and the private sector industry with a view to strengthening the Bank's activities with China.

During his visit, President Kaberuka is scheduled to meet with Chinese Development Banks, infrastructure and ICT industries representatives.

In addition, the President will give a keynote address at the International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC), and also host a lunch in honour of African Ambassadors based in Beijing.

The President is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes the Bank's Executive Director for China, Bruce Montador, and the Infrastructure, Private Sector and Regional Integration Department Vice President, Bobby Pittman.
