Okpocha Bright While growing up, did it ever occur to you that you would make a living from comedy?
No, it never occurred to me that I would end up with comedy as a career that would pay my bills. I started comedy as an art that I loved; making a living out of it was the last thing in my mind.
What were you intending to be before you met comedy and turned it into a career?
I wanted to either get into an events management outfit or banking. Actually the truth is anything that paid the bills was what I was really out for. But as you we all know, Nigeria has its ways of changing people's dreams and career which I was already and also open for as a citizen.
How has comedy life and career been?
It's been very challenging. There are the good and the bad sides of it. It comes with a lot of happy and sad parts, the pains the gains. But the fact is that in every career, the challenges are very conventional. Meeting the demand of the fans and making them laugh is not that an easy task. Representing whatever image you have or you have painted for yourself is also part of the challenges. Meeting up with the expectation cannot be left out of the contest of trying to stay at that level in which you have made for yourself. The bottom line is that the love I get from the fans and followers covers for anything negative that comes with fame and the career.
What are your expectations for your career in 2010?
Well, for everyday I challenge myself to a new target and achievement. I don't wait till the 31st of every December to make plans, so as it is I am working on a tour through 2010, starting from London on the February 21 and will run through the year, hitting four cities. I am trying to also improve my art and most likely my delivery, it's more or less re-branding for me this time. Its only natural it happens.
Does your career have any influence on the way you dress?
Well, yes it definitely does. I can't afford to be caught off guard. I try to wear cloths that are not common and so in other words, it's a bit expensive. I am not complaining though, whatever I wear stylishly gives a detail of what I feel, my mood and how I want to be addressed.
Does it take you time to dress up or to choose what to wear to an event?
No. I always pick out what I want to wear a day before so that way it's a case of taking my bath. I also buy cloths that have relative colours, so this way making the blend easier.
Do you always have problem deciding what to wear for an event?
Well like I said, I pick clothes with relative colours, so its pretty easy although sometimes it take me little time to make up my mind but that depends on the event or party I am going for. But if it's for regular everyday hustle, it takes me less than one minute to set it out.
Which are you more comfortable in, formal, casual or native wear?
I am very comfortable with native wears, but that depends on the textile and colour. I am particular about the kind of colour and the materials.
What would you consider as your style, is it your dreadlocks or your suits or shoes?
It's all connected. My hairstyle starts it all. Due to my dreadlock (chronic as it's called) I have to make sure that there is a contrast with what I wear. Now when it comes to clothes, I think it connects with itself. Wrist watch, shoes, shirts, suit and the perfume I wear, all have to blend together to speak of my style. I don't stick to one particular thing as my style. My dress code and everything I am wearing must sing a chorus making the same sound that meets the eye.
Do you have more formal wears than casuals?
Right now, I have more casuals than formal wear due to the fact that I don't go for formal events as I use to.
Do you wear natives at all? How many do you have and do you think it fits you better than corporate?
I have less of native wears and I sincerely think they all fit. I am freer with the native wears but unfortunately I don't have a lot of it. With a rough calculation I might have about 15 or more or less of native.
Which is your favorite designer?
I don't wear names. I just buy what I like and what suits me. I buy things that also speak of my personality.
Are you a perfume, shoe, wrist watch or clothe freak? Any that you choose, how many of it do you have in your wardrobe?
I am into all of them. I have a lot of shoes and snickers. I have clothes too but it's just that I love wristwatches more. I can't tell how many I have. I don't think it's a safe statement giving out the number out to public. All I can do is show pictures of my shoe rack but my wardrobe, I don't think it's safe to display what I have.
Can you step out of your house without using perfume and which designers do you go for while buying perfumes?
I can't step out of my room without perfumes on. I am more tilted towards Gucci and Dolce&Gabana person because I am used to it.
What can't you be spotted in?
I think that should be bogus trousers/pants. Count me out when it comes to stuffs like that
What do you like wearing on red carpet event?
I don't wear clothes for red carpets. But if I am caught on a red carpet, I hope I am wearing what I normally wear, which is clothes.
What would you consider not fashionable on red carpet and you cannot wear them?
For men, you can be caught in anything that fits and depicts the individual positively. For women, well if it exposes more than 40% of the skin, I think it should be for late night clubbing.
Would you describe wearing expensive things as being fashionable?
No. wearing expensive clothes does not mean one is fashionable. Some expensive clothes are crap.
How much does it cost you to shop?
Whatever it cost, I am not limited to finance when it comes to making me appreciated. It is better I spend it than save it and be disrespected fashion wise.
What is the most expensive thing in your wardrobe and how much is it?
It's always most of my wristwatches. I can't give a cost on it. Like I said, it's not proper. You should understand what I mean
Do you like colours, which one is your best?
I'm into white and purple, although, my favorite colour is blue, but I hardly wear it when it comes to my clothes. I just live in it; my curtains, drapes, wall and most things in my house are blue. When it comes to clothes that I wear, it's different.
How many suits do you have?
Well, I think it might be a little over 50 I guess.
Do you wear jewelries like necklace and bracelets?
I do only wristwatches. Necklaces are on very few occasions
How often do you shop or up grade you wardrobe?
As a celebrity, I can't really do a rotation on clothes that often, I mean repeating clothes that I have won so whenever I travel, I shop and I travel very often.
