Nigeria: Amodu to Lead Eagles Against Paraguay, Japan

Lagos — Despite his demotion to coach the Super Eagles Team B, consisting of home-based players, Shaibu Amodu will be in charge of the Super Eagles for a friendly against Paraguay or Japan on March 3 in London. .

It was gathered that the team would consist of a combination of local players and fringe foreign-based players.

"The technical committee is expected to provide a shortlist of three foreign coaches to the board by the end of February, but the time is too short for us to appoint one and let him take charge of the friendly on March 3.

"So, Amodu will be in charge during the game. But the team will be some home-based players, and a few foreign-based players who will be given a chance to stake their claims for places in the team for the World Cup," an NFF official, who did not want to be named, said.

it was learnt that NFF reasoned that Paraguay would give the Eagles a chance to sample South American style of football, which they expect to come up against when they take on Argentina in their opening World Cup first round match on June 12.

Japan, on the other hand, would give the Eagles an insight into the Asian brand of football as they will tackle South Korea, also at the 2010 World Cup.

An earlier proposal to take on Portugal in South Africa was not considered because the NFF would want the game played at a more central location in Europe, where most of the country's stars are based.

Officials disclosed that Nigeria could still take on Portugal in Abuja in April. The match is being packaged by a sports marketing firm.

"We need to play Portugal because Greece are in our World Cup group," said NFF technical committee boss, Taiwo Ogunjobi.
