Zimbabwe: GPA - Negotiators Burn Midnight Candle

Harare — Talks between negotiators from Zanu-PF and the two MDC formations continued late into the night yesterday with the parties remaining mum on progress made so far.

The discussions resumed on Monday night after being adjourned in December last year after the South African facilitation was briefed on the state of the negotiations.

The meeting on Monday started around 7 pm and lasted until 11 pm.

The negotiations resumed yesterday and went on late into the night.

MDC negotiator and party secretary general Professor Welshman Ncube would not say how things were going.

"I am currently in the meeting, but I am not sure when we are going to finish," he said.

The other negotiators were not picking up their phones. Cdes Patrick Chinamasa and Nicholas Goche are representing Zanu-PF while, Mr Tendai Biti and Mr Elton Mangoma are standing in for MDC-T. Prof Ncube's fellow MDC negotiator is Mrs Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga.

The South African facilitation team comprises former ministers Charles Nqakula and Mac Maharaj, and South African President Jacob Zuma's international adviser Lindiwe Zulu.

The talks follow the Sadc Organ on Politics, Defence and Security's call for full implementation of the Global Political Agreement after a meeting in Mozambique last month.

Zanu-PF has cited illegal sanctions and the activities of pirate radio stations as some of the outstanding issues.

MDC-T has raised concerns over the swearing in of Roy Bennett as Deputy Agriculture Minister as well as the status of Reserve Bank Governor Dr Gideon Gono and Attorney-General Mr Johannes Tomana's appointments.
